Custonaci

The Town - Custonaci

Custonaci rises on a 217 mt above sea level hill, in a pleasant area between the sea and Monte Cofano, the top of which is an Oriented Natural Reserve. The same is the background of the homonymous gulf, where you find Cornino, maritime hamlet of Custonaci and village of fishermen.

It is a rural and trade centre, famous above all for being the lynch-pin of the wide and rich marble field: out the Custonaci quarries it is dug the “Perlato di Sicilia”, valued and well-known marble ivory-coloured with beige veinings.

The History - The first inhabitants were the Sicani: marks of them last in the grottos that opens in the area around the town. Then its history is mostly the of Erice, to which was connected since the first half of the last century.

With Normans domination, in consequence of a process of occupation of the uncultivated lands, the Elimi small settlement was changed into a State town. The built-up area kept on growing according to an orthogonal plan around the Madonna Sanctuary, already then important place of veneration and destination of pilgrimages.

After 1948 it became autonomous town.
